Huawei MateBook 14 (2024) review: the Chinese brand is far from having said its last word in France

Huawei MateBook 14 (2024) review: the Chinese brand is far from having said its last word in France

It’s no secret that Huawei has been facing some difficulties since the US sanctions imposed on it. However, with the release of the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra which is the best camera phone of this year as well as With the arrival of Google applications through Aurora, the Chinese giant is getting back on its feet.

A comeback that had already begun when Huawei had the idea of diversify by offering a slew of solid laptopsjoined today by Huawei MateBook 14 2024. So here’s what we think of this new iteration of MateBook.

A simple and elegant design

The MateBook 14’s design is both elegant and functional. With its aluminum frame and neat finish, it evokes a pebble shape with a soft and rounded appearance. The 14″ format will help it slip into any backpack. It is as light as it is compact, weighing just 1.31 kg and measuring 14.5 mm thick.

Despite the fact that our test unit was sent to us with a QWERTY keyboard, it is pleasant to use. It should be noted that it has two levels of white backlighting, remaining quite discreet even at the highest setting. The imposing touchpad offers a pleasant glide, with great precision and a satisfying click.

We will also appreciate that The MateBook’s power button retains its series-specific function. In fact, it integrates a fingerprint sensorproviding fast and convenient biometric security to unlock the machine.

There is still one aspect of the design that surprised us with this new version of the MateBook 14. In order to adopt the round aesthetic of the PC, The screen of this one is fitted with rounded edges. A choice that loses a few pixels at the 4 corners of the panel, and which can sometimes be disconcerting. The fact remains that this decision gives an even more sympathetic air to the design of Huawei’s MateBook 14. Let’s talk about this famous screen together here.

An original OLED and touch screen

One of the highlights of the MateBook 14 is undoubtedly its 14.2-inch OLED display. With a resolution of 2880 × 1920 pixels and a refresh rate of 120 Hz, This screen has everything you need to deliver a quality visual experience.

Let’s say almost early, since Its maximum brightness of 450 nits ensures clear visibility indoors, but is completely insufficient outdoors.. A rather limiting point for anyone who would like to telework with the machine in a sunny situation.

In return, the panel supports 100% of the sRGB and DCI-P3 color gamuts, as well as 95% of the Adobe RGB gamut. An extensive color coverage that is particularly useful for content creation professionals, such as photographers for example.

Moreover, The touch screen is compatible with Huawei’s M-Pencil styluswhich adds an extra dimension for users who prefer to draw or take notes by hand.

Sufficiently powerful and responsive

Huawei MateBook 14 2024 Review

The MateBook 14 is powered by an Intel Core Ultra 7 155H processor, coupled with 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD. This allowed us to handle demanding tasks without problems during our tests, such as editing photos using Photoshop for example. It has efficient thermal management, where the MateBook remains pleasant to use in all circumstances, all in significant silence.

As for the graphics part, Huawei’s PC is equipped with Intel Arc A350M card. This is a graphics solution that is not designed for intensive gaming, but is sufficient for light games and moderate tasks. Again, no problems under Photoshop here, while maintaining a certain autonomy.

A champion in the autonomy category

Battery life is a crucial criterion for an ultrabook, and The MateBook 14 does not disappoint in this area.. With its 70 Wh battery, our tests have shown possible use of the MateBook for a day and a half of workall with 75% screen brightness. An excellent result for the PC whose energy consumption is particularly low.

The MateBook 14 comes with a 65W USB-C charger, which can recharge the battery from 5% to 100% in approximately 75 minutes.

A selection of starving ports

In terms of connectivity, the MateBook 14 offers very few ports. It only has one USB-C port, two USB-A ports, an HDMI port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The laptop supports Wi-Fi 6, delivering fast and stable connection speeds, as well as Bluetooth 5.1 for enhanced wireless connectivity with peripherals like headphones or a wireless mouse.

Not a great design for audio and webcam

The MateBook 14 is equipped with two microphones and two speakers. Unfortunately, the latter are rather poorly located, being on the bottom shell. This results in a muffled sound when used in a context other than on a desk.

The webcam is located at the top of the screen, offering decent image quality for video conferences. As for privacy, however, we regret the fact that Huawei only offers to disable its camera by software, without a dedicated button or even better, using a webcam cover.
